Herbert "H.I." McDonnough was an Arizona criminal married to policewoman, Ed McDonnough. Not long after getting engaged, the two found out that Ed was infertile. They also found out that they could not adopt, due to H.I.'s criminal record. They soon devised a plan to kidnap one of five babies that belonged to Nathan Arizona.
